DATA WAREHOUSING FOR THE DBA

BACKGROUND: The first word in data warehousing is data. The individual responsible for managing this large amount of data is the DBA. How well the DBA manages the performance of the batch loads as well as the end users query response time is a critical success factor indicator. .

DESCRIPTION: This seminar is a combination lecture and workshop, wherein the attendee will learn the process of conducting capacity planing, performance tuning, security, creating, and loading the data warehouse, and building the physical data model. This course is directed toward understanding deliverables that may be produced throughout the data warehousing development process from the DBA’s perspective. It takes you from high level concepts applicable to all RDBMS’s to the very specific how to with ORACLE examples

Upon completing this seminar the student will be able to:

  • Conduct data storage and sizing estimates -- In terms of partitions, tables, and indexes
  • Conduct CPU processor capacity estimates
  • Create and Tune the instance
  • Administer Backups, Restores, and determine security requirements for both the data warehouse and the metadata
  • Document the Physical data model
  • Understand parallel platforms, data extraction tools, load tools, & describe the tasks of the DBA
  • Understand the importance of Metadata
  • Understand the data warehouse technical environment including servers, network, middleware, PC hardware and software, and relational DBMSs.
  • Understand what it takes to maintain the DBMS and its scripts

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Data warehouse project managers, system developers, system and data architects, database administrators, and those interested in how data can be turned into information and how to compete in the marketplace with information.

INSTRUCTOR: Don Meyer is president of Don Meyer & Associates. He advises clients on all aspects of database administration, Unix/network administration, client/server and data warehouse implementations, including conducting training courses and, conducting database performance audits. Don is Oracle 7 DBA Certified and has published articles on client/server downsizing migrations.
